Origin Stories: National Pie and Chocolate Cake Day

So, how did we come to commemorate two of America’s favorite post-dinner dishes on their own respective days? National Pie Day actually dates back to 1975, when a teacher from Colorado with an affinity for pies declared January 23rd an unofficial holiday. Popularity grew until 1986, when the American Pie Council began sponsoring National Pie Day as an official holiday (Calendarr).

As for National Chocolate Cake Day, it became a widely known holiday in the early 21st century following a long history that began in 1764, when a Dr. James Baker discovered how to create chocolate by grinding cacao beans. (Cacao is the raw, unprocessed version of cocoa) Chocolate (as we know it today) has come a long way: “During the era of the 1830s and 1840s, it was primarily a drink that you mixed with water. Furthermore, it wasn’t even sweet. The original chocolate drinkers would often make up a savory, almost bitter beverage that they would typically consume early in the morning” (Days of the Year).

Delicious Ways to Celebrate Today

It’s definitely not the 1800s, which means there are a bunch of different and exciting ways you can celebrate these two holidays. For a more low key celebration, consider stopping by your favorite local bakery to pick up a few of your favorite slices to curl up with in front of the TV. Or, if you’re feeling more adventurous, try participating in your very own bake off and inviting your friends and family to be the judges of the best slice.

Whether you decide to go for the more relaxed or crowded celebration, there’s no better way to indulge in a delicious slice (or two, or three) of your favorite pie or chocolate cake than with our high-quality, recyclable clear plates, cups and silverware! Made to sparkle, shine and stand tough, our products are an affordable way to be free of annoying dish duty, which means you get more time for the things you love.
